We couldn't have said it better ourselves. Today's post features an interview with the lead of South African sock modelling team, Sexi Soxy. Steve offers insight on a very unique occupation; sock modeller. Thought this would be an interesting topic since, so far, we've focused on individual sock brands. But what about the creatives who make the socks look so good? That's where Sexi Soxy comes in. Without further ado, The Sock Review presents 'a day in the life of a sock model.'
TSR: What got you started in the “sock modelling” business?
SS: Well, ever since I can remember, my fiancé and I really loved socks. But interesting socks. Whenever I saw someone wear cool socks, I’d admire their style from a distance and ponder over how insanely cool they looked. I think incorporating socks into your everyday fashion adds a whole new level of possibilities to the potential outfits and styles you can wear. And this intrigued me so much that I started exploring with many different socks and outfits. And before I knew it, my fiancé and I were modelling socks. And we got people to model them with us. And here we are today.
TSR: Your motto “Life’s too short to wear boring socks” – we love it! How does this challenge you to make the best of each day?
SS: Only one expression: FOMO (fear of missing out)! And what I mean by that is that every day when I get up, there are so many combinations of outfits and socks I want to wear. And every day I worry that I’m missing out on some kind of better or more whimsical combination. And this causes me to stand in front of the mirror way too long, deciding what looks better. Yeah, yeah, I know. Isn’t that what most of us do only with regular clothes? Of course. Now imagine having to match bada** socks to your outfit and make it look even more amazing…
TSR: Where is Sexi Soxy based and what is the weather like there at this time of year? Do you have a favorite type of sock you wear during the (summer/winter)?
SS: We are based in Pretoria, South Africa, but we have models all over the world. For us here in the southern hemisphere, it’s currently winter. And this is actually frustrating, because trousers hide socks… And not all trousers look good when you roll them up to reveal the epic socks you’re wearing. So that makes life a bit more boring this time of the year (with a lot less time spent in front of the mirror, luckily). But in summer, we go wild. We go for shorts, skirts and wacky socks all the way. We have no favorites.
TSR: In your opinion, what makes a great pair of socks?
SS: I personally love bamboo socks. The texture feels absolutely fantastic on your feet. It’s like walking on satin all day long. Apart from this, if the socks have a unique pattern that I’ve never seen before, I’ll buy them immediately, regardless of texture.
TSR: We love bamboo as a material for socks - Bamboo-fiber socks have naturally- occurring bacteria and odor resisting properties.
TSR: What inspires your photo shoots? Does each pair have a story to tell or how do you come up with a theme or composition if that applies?
SS: What we aim to achieve with Sexi Soxy is to show the world that you can wear amazing socks wherever you go. And for this reason, we don’t try to match a certain pair with a certain theme or setting. We try to always take any socks, match them with a great outfit, and go to everyday places to do the shoots. Indoors, outdoors, you name it. One thing we do keep in mind is appropriateness. And this is what puts most people off from wearing cool socks. We have all seen that one weirdo somewhere in the street that wore an absolutely ridiculous pair of socks with his clothes. And people see this as too radical. We aim to show people that if you do it RIGHT… the end result can be truly satisfying on the eye.
TSR: I must admit, I'm probably that weirdo, lol - it takes all kinds, right? ;)
TSR: What do you wish to accomplish through your sock modeling?
SS: Plain and simple: To show the world how cool socks can be, and thus to become the models that sock companies can’t do without. We want Sexi Soxy to be their go-to agency.
TSR: Wishing you great luck on this endeavor!
TSR: What’s the best advice you ever received that you would like to share with other aspiring models?
SS: This is so cheesy! But yeah, the best advice we can give you as an aspiring model is to send us your portfolio so you can join the Sexi Soxy family (wink wink)!
TSR: Check out Sexi Soxy's Instagram account: www.instagram.com/sexisoxy
That's quite a niche market there! Be sure to check out Sexi Soxy's Instagram feed, which is where we first discovered them. Don't be shy! Try out a few of your own sock-modelling poses. Let us know what you love best about this post in the comments below.
P.S.: Dear readers, did you know 'modelling' is spelled typically with one "L" in the U.S., but spelled with two "L"s most other places in the world? Since Sexi Soxy is from South Africa, I've decided to go for the two "l" approach for this post.
